Kawasaki Ninja 250R to hit Indian streets by May

Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj today announced the tentative launch of the Ninja 250R in May-June 2009 in collaboration with Kawasaki. The bike will be imported in CBU (Completely Built Unit) format and sold in India. This announcement lays to rest speculations of assembly of the Ninja 250R at Bajaj’s Chakan plant and consequently the final price tag on the bike is also expected to increase significantly to over Rs 2 lakhs.

Speaking at the launch of the new XCD Sprint 135 today, Rajiv Bajaj also informed of a tie up with KTM, Austria for development and retail of bikes over 125cc from KTM stables. “While the Kawasaki Ninja will be introduced as a completely-built unit, we will assemble KTM’s bigger bikes, like the Superduke and RC8, at our Chakan facility. Their introduction has been delayed a bit. We are also developing two bikes with engine capacity above 125cc with KTM that will hit the market next year,” Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj said.

Launch of KTM high capacity bikes in CKD format will enable Bajaj to reduce import duties and sport a considerably lower price tag that the current competition from Yamaha (R1, MT01) & Suzuki (M1800R, Hayabusa) which have both gone the CBU route.
