BAJAJ Auto’s latest action-packed TV commercial showing bikers in a thrilling stunt sequence lasting 1 minute and 30 seconds could soon be punctured if the Mumbai traffic police have their way.

Calling for the commercial to be modified immediately, Joint Commissioner (Traffic) Vijay Kamble pointed to scenes where bikers do a wheelie with hands off the handlebar and use their legs to spin the bike around.

The commercial went on air last week. “Youngsters could enact the stunts so we have told the producers to depict it less dangerously,” Kamble said.

‘Adequate warning in commercial’

On Saturday ad filmmaker Piyush Pandey and Kamble discussed objections raised by the traffic police.

“We have made our reservations clear to them and are awaiting their response as they have sought time,” Kamble said.

The joint commissioner said the traffic police would oppose commercials that used stunts youngsters get easily influenced by such commercials and want to perform them,” Kamble said.

This could often prove dangerous — injury and death — being common consequences.

Bajaj Auto general manager Amit Nandi said, “Talks are on with the police. The issue will hopefully be settled soon.”

Nandi emphasized that the ad had a warning, clearly announced before it began, that the stunts were dramatised and performed by experts.

“There is another warning at the bottom of the TV screen throughout the commercial,” Nandi said, adding that the company believed that viewers were mature enough to understand that the riders were well protected with riding gear.

A Bajaj official said the commercial had been shot in Cape Town and had been performed by a stunt team, including European stunt riding champion AC Farias and Matte Griffin.
