The NOIDA Police today ordered an inquiry into a stunt performed by a 21-year-old on the 23.5 kilometer Noida-Greater Noida Expressway on Saturday.
Police say the youth, Gurpreet Singh (Sunny), rode a bike on one tyre for 12.1 kilometres without getting permission from the authorities.
Gurpreet, a resident of Sarita Vihar, claims he was practising to set an Indian record under the ‘wheelie’ section.
“Wheelie (moving on one tyre) is the most difficult part of biking and I have set my eyes on an 18 kilometer run to get my name registered in the Limca Book of Records,†Gurpreet said.
A member of an online bikers’ group called XBhP, Sunny is planning to buy a super bike to complete his dream stunt. The group’s site is promoted by a lubricant manufacturing company and Sunny claims the video of his stunt, which he recorded with help from friends, will be available for viewing on the site soon.
Sunny, who is doing a course in Graphics designing from a Patel Nagar institute, says he has performed stunts for advertisements and wants to live up to his screen name on the site - ‘Skyscraper’.
The police, however, are not taking the matter lightly as an enquiry has been ordered into the incident. The Phase-II police will handle the matter, officers said.
SP (Traffic) Ajay Sahdev said, “Mobile vans will be deployed on the Expressway to check dangerous stunts performed by young kids.â€
Sahdev said neither Gurpreet nor any members of the bikers club sought permission for the stunt.
Officers say that after the death of two boys—Sanjeev Raj and Amit Chopra—in a stunt that went wrong, they have taken steps to stop such incidents. Police say they have sought help from residents of villages along the Expressway to curb such acts.
Gurpreet, however, claims he had made enough safety arrangement “even though there is always an element of risk involved in the ‘wheelie’â€.
“Four others were moving along with me to keep other vehicles away and handle me in case something went wrong. All of us take care of personal safety,†he said.
Sunny is undeterred by reports of the inquiry. He plans to move to ‘smoother’ and better highways to practice stunts. “The Expressway is too crowded so we are planning to shift our sessions to a newly laid highway in Jaisalmer in Rajasthan,†he said.
