As per data released today by Bajaj Auto, motorcycle sales for India’s second largest company are down by a whopping 33% year on year. Sales last month declined to 118,510 as against 176,441 units in December 2007.
Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj said the decline in sales is in effort to reduce dealer inventories across their stores. Bajaj Auto is a major player in the premium & sports commuter segment of the market which comprises of motorcycles with displacement over 125cc. With no new major launches in this segment by Bajaj and increasing competition in the segment from Yamaha, TVS & Hero Honda, sales have dipped considerably for Bajaj this year.
Bajaj Auto is expected to launch a new premium product in this segment later this month. Speculations are rife that the product will be Kawasaki 250R Ninja. However the company is currently keeping it’s cards close to the chest.
