Bajaj today launched Platina 125 based on the 125cc XCD engine. The vehicle priced at a lowly Rs 39,000 is expected to boost Bajaj’s bottom line & market share which has seen a decline this year with a trend for the commuter segment (100-125cc) bikes. In 2008, sales of higher capacity motorcycles took a downturn while the economy segment pickedup with rising fuel prices.
This launch also marks Bajaj’s renewed interested in the lower segment of motorcycle market which is had recently announced intentions to quit for good. With the new Platina 125 DTS-Si, Bajaj hopes to wean away 100cc customers from rival manufacturers including Hero Honda which has a dominating presence in the 100cc segment. While Bajaj doen not wish to completely move away from the 100cc segment where it’s Platina 100 has good sales, it will be hoping to gather more market share in hte 125cc+ segment where the gworth has been over 14% in the last seven years as compared to a 7% growth in the 100cc segment.
